French Frame Signet Ring

Origin
The signet ring began not as ornament but as proof of identity. In medieval Europe, nobles and merchants engraved a family crest or set of initials into the ring's face, pressed it into hot wax and sealed a letter. That impression served as signature and as contract. The face had to be flat, full and substantial enough to leave a clean mark—the common origin of every signet form that followed.

Proportion
The face here is not a plain geometric shape. Built on a rectangle, it draws to symmetrical points at either end, with a subtle swell along the upper and lower edges—an outline closer to the moulding of a classical picture frame. Shaped faces of this kind belong to a European decorative tradition, adding a layer of ornament that the plain forms don't carry, and naturally containing the engraving at the centre as the subject within the frame.

The face is set across the finger on a deliberately fine band, creating a clear contrast in thickness. Light on the hand and easy in daily wear, it suits the pinky, ring and middle fingers.

Composition
The horizontal face offers generous width, suited to a single line: a full name, a short phrase, or paired letters at a legible size without compressing the type. The shaped outline already functions as a border, so the engraving needs no added ornament—simple lettering shows the form to its best effect. Vertical space is limited, so multi-line layouts are not recommended.

Custom engraving
The face can be configured to your requirements: a full name, a short phrase, initials, English or Chinese text, dates and symbols. Ang Jewellery adjusts typeface and layout to the proportions of the face, with production beginning after proof confirmation. The face may also be left plain, preserving the full framed outline.

Two finishes are available. Oxidized engraving darkens the lines for sharp, high-contrast definition. Polished engraving leaves the metal bare, revealing the lettering as the light shifts—the more restrained effect, as shown.
