Origin
The signet ring began not as ornament but as proof of identity. The word derives from the Latin signum, meaning "sign." In medieval Europe, nobles and merchants engraved a crest into the ring's face, pressed it into hot wax and sealed a letter. That impression served as signature and as contract. By the close of the tenth century, wax sealing was standard practice across the royal chanceries of Western Europe; by the mid-thirteenth, freemen had adopted it too. When adhesive envelopes made the seal obsolete, the ring itself endured—no longer a tool, but a mark of identity.
The composition
This design follows the form of a full heraldic achievement, reading from top to bottom:

Crown — the mark of rank and authority, crowning the composition.

Escutcheon — the shield at the centre, carrying the principal device.

Lion rampant — a lion risen on its hind legs, the most common animal charge in European heraldry. Regarded as the king of beasts, it stands for courage, nobility, strength and valour; the rampant posture is particularly associated with Scottish arms.

Mantling — the scrolling foliate drapery flanking the shield, derived from the cloth worn over a knight's helm and rendered in heraldry as slashed, curling leaves.

Scroll — the ribbon along the base.
The face is executed in deep seal engraving, giving pronounced relief so that fine detail holds at small scale—the technique that allowed traditional crest rings to leave a complete impression in wax.
The scroll and your name
In traditional heraldry, the scroll carries the family motto—a single line a house holds to across generations.
Here, that space is given to your name.
The substitution is deliberate. European arms were granted to specific individuals and their descendants, never to a surname; this ring therefore claims no lineage and is not a coat of arms granted or recorded by any heraldic authority. Its meaning runs the other way. The composition borrows a visual language a thousand years old, but its subject is the person wearing it now. The place once reserved for what came before you carries your own name instead.

Custom engraving
The scroll can be engraved with a first name, surname, full name or initials in English or Chinese. Ang Jewellery adjusts typeface and layout to the proportions of the scroll, with production beginning after proof confirmation. The heraldic design above is fixed and is not altered.
Two finishes are available. Oxidized engraving deepens the contrast across the relief and gives the heraldic detail its sharpest definition, as shown. Polished engraving leaves the metal bare, revealing the design as the light shifts. Given the density of linework in this design, the oxidized finish is recommended.
