Origin
The signet ring began not as ornament but as proof of identity. The word derives from the Latin signum, meaning "sign." In medieval Europe, nobles and merchants engraved a crest or set of initials into the ring's face, pressed it into hot wax and sealed a letter. That impression served as signature and as contract. The face had to be flat, full and substantial enough to leave a clean mark—the common origin of every signet form that followed.

Proportion
The square is the widest face in the signet family. More open than either the oval or the rectangle, it accommodates a complete decorative composition—denser ornament, finer linework, and a letter scaled up without crowding. The band is broad and squared at the shoulders, with unmistakable presence on the hand.

Composition and technique
The face is executed in relief: the letter and its surrounding foliate scrollwork stand raised, while the recessed ground is oxidized so the design lifts clear of the dark field behind it. The contrast holds every line legible. Note that this reverses the usual approach—here the black is the background, not the lettering.

The composition draws on the illuminated letters of medieval manuscripts: a central initial with vines and leaves growing from the surrounding field to wind around and support it.

Choosing your initial
This is a fixed design. The scrollwork frame does not change; you select only the central letter.

The reason is compositional. The proportions between letter and ornament, the negative space and the interlacing are configured as a whole. Opening the face to free-form text would not hold the same balance. A fixed frame keeps every piece consistent in quality.
